That first paragraph had me thinking you were about to tear someone a new one. All too often people hurl insults and then say "No offense" thinking that will make things all better. However, I must say that this is a well thought out, non offensive argument that actually has a point to make. Bravo!

Yes, I concur! Much more experimentation! :) Thanks very much for commenting! I hadn't thought about the teams aspect, we may want to try that next time we have a bajillionty players. Definitely looking forward to Spring Break, whenever it emerges! :)

I think I remember that Deadlands game! I was actually GMing that one and I believe Nick's PC was the one trying to collect the books. I remember trying to start up a campaign at least twice and never quite getting it off the ground. I had more success with other campaigns after I moved but I'm sorry we couldn't continue that one.

Hello Jim,
Thanks ever so much for the review. I agree that at the upper limits you do have to wade/wait through a lot of stories, in which case you could split into teams or (as it seems ye did) cut down on the number of rounds. Curiously, I found alcohol to increase patience in that regard; since you found the opposite, further experimentation is obviously in order.
Not sure when Spring Break is actually going to hit shelves, but it's the next thing on Atlas' production line.
We played one night of Deadlands, in which I was a British "great white hunter", and you were a gentleman interested in collecting Hoyle's books. Sadly, we never made it further than that; lots of failed attempts to start new campaigns in that house.
Cheers,
Zachary Anderson

Yes! I think making faeries all cute and sugary sweet is just wrong. Even in stories designed for children, they should at least be tricky and mischievous. They don't just grant wishes when you catch them, they make you pay. Sometimes it is a price all too horrible, and you wind up wishing you'd never wished at all. Holly Black's YA novel trilogy, The Modern Faerie Tales, really capture this essence, shedding light into the dark, manipulative side of the underground, and I'd love to see more authors take this approach with faeries. Loved this article.

Thanks for responding! I agree that in the cases of fiction that gets into the specifics of "fey politics" or whatnot -- or indeed any fiction in which you want to have fairy creatures as protagonists or in support of the protagonists (or even neutral for that matter) -- it can be good to have fairy creatures that cover the whole spectrum. In stories in which they're meant to be antagonistic, though, they can be a truly awesome resource, and certainly much more than the mere annoyances some plot lines occasionally try to make them out to be.

I don't know that they need to be dark and horrfying, but they should certainly not be all sweet and light. I preferred Robert Weinberg's A Modern Magician in that some fairy creatures were good, some were evil, but most were morally ambiguous and could identify with either at will. That made for some very interesting characters.
Thanks for a great post.

Absolutely love this game. A major favorite with my friends, especially since you can play just one round and have a great time. We like it more than Apples to Apples since it's just more entertaining, but at this point we've seen almost all the goals. Need moar!

I've got to admit, the initiative you talk about in your post is very tempting!

I don't know that people are necessarily being trained to look for emoticons by their use, though. Some folks, maybe, but I think it's part of a bigger problem -- the adult attention span has shrunk down to pocket-size, likely because of the way the internet works in general. With some folks, it doesn't matter HOW many signs you throw at them - they're just not paying attention.

That said, even when folks ARE paying attention, things can still get kind of foggy. Believe me, I'd love to be able to do my best Jonathan Swift imitation online (actually that sounds like fun, so despite all this I may try it some time), but the very nature of internet communication works against that kind of thing. A lot of times I have trouble figuring out what someone really means in a text/Tweet/etc even after I've stared at it for twenty minutes considering every possible angle on it -- largely because I simply don't have enough information. Nothing really compares to the level of info you get when you're actually standing next to someone in Meatspace!

I'll freely admit that I probably worry more about hurting people's feelings than most folks do, but that's something I see as more of a strength than a weakness. It at the very least means I'm definitely paying attention.

Still, best of luck on your Colbertification initiative! If you manage to pull it off, it'd be a wondrous thing indeed -- and I say that in all seriousness. It'd be very cool. (But, that said, you see how many extra words I just added when I could have just gone :) ?! Hahaha!)

Hey, thanks for commenting! Honestly, I don't think you're a miscreant. :) I agree that 4E is very different from 3.5, to the point that they're different kinds of RPGs. I did point out a number of similarities and I will admit that they do share more elements with each other than they do with any other RPGs I've played (World of Darkness, Call of Cthulhu, Savage Worlds, Amber, Talislanta, etc). But no, they're not the same game, nor am I saying that they are. What I AM saying is that I have no problem calling both games D&D because that is in fact what they're both called. But just because I and a lot of other folks call them both D&D doesn't mean I believe they're the same RPG. By that same token if animals from two different Phyla shared the same name I wouldn't believe they're the same animal regardless of how many similarities there are between them -- but I would still call them by their given names.

As for 3.5 and 4E, I've enjoyed playing both in the past and I'm sure I'll continue to enjoy playing both in the future. I'm very interested in trying out Pathfinder and I'm also keen to check out what they've been doing with some of the other d20-inspired systems (True20, Fantasy Craft, etc.) when I get a chance.

I have a tendency to self-edit a lot on the front end -- essentially while I'm in the process of typing things out to begin with. When I do editing passes on written work after it's done I do find myself wanting to focus on the minutia, though there usually comes the point when I become bored enough with it that my brain yells, "JUST POST THE DAMN THING!!" So at that point I usually do.
"Now you can go out on your date with a clear head and perhaps have sex later in the evening." "So that’s pretty much why I use emoticons."

Those two sentences, back to back, spin to a wholly delightful alternate message for this article: "Use emoteys; have more sex!"

Outside of this brilliant conclusion, awesome article, Jim. I really enjoy reading your work. ^_^

I wonder who is behind these D&D edition wars as it seems like a handful of miscreants on both ends of the spectrum. I caught your link from the Savage Worlds messageboard and I have run every edition of D&D, however I am a staunch member of the oldschool side and have a daily blog for the oldschool/retro-clone games.
I am unsure why there are edition wars since nobody is going to influence the games that I run and I wouldn't want to tell others how an rpg should be played or what the rules should be written. If you and your group enjoy the game then you have found the perfect game for your group, regardless of edition.

Jim,
You hit the nail right on the head. I was reluctantly dragged into 4E last year, and I'll be damned if I didn't actually like it--alot. Once I got over the my hang-up that there was only 1 essential D&D and accepted that there were a variety of ways to "imagine" a fantasy/sword and sorcery RPG, that opened up a whole new world of gaming enjoyment. I missed some elements of 3/3.5 D&D, and I tried switching back to that system and found it far too clunky with regards to combat. 4E gives the characters much more options than "OK, I swing my weapon again" and thus is far easier to attract new players who have had limited experience with RPG's. But the brilliance of the system is that once you have mastered the basic mechanics, it can become as complex and detailed as you and your group want to make it. Thanks as always for your words of wisdom.
